This One Was About More Than the Cars
|
|
|
This year, I went to Monterey with a different mission: I wanted to give a copy of The Enthusiast’s Guide to Collector Cars to every young car enthusiast I could find.
No contest. No drawing. No social media requirement. Just find a kid who loves cars and give them a book.
|
|
|
|
|
And that simple idea ended up changing the way I experienced Monterey Car Week.
I met young enthusiasts at shows, auctions, racetracks, and events throughout the week. Some were already walking around identifying cars that many adults couldn’t name. Others were just beginning to discover this incredible world.
Every time I handed one of them a book, my message was essentially the same: Keep learning. Keep asking questions. And stay excited about cars.

Because this hobby needs them. Maybe one of those books ends up forgotten on a bedroom shelf. But maybe one doesn’t.
Maybe one of those kids becomes a future designer, engineer, restorer, historian, racer, collector, journalist, concours judge—or simply someone who spends the rest of their life loving cars.
If my book helps light that spark for even one of them, every copy I gave away was worth it.

📚 The People Behind the Books
|
|
|
There was another theme that followed me throughout Monterey: contributors.
Car Week felt like a reunion. Everywhere I went—Laguna Seca, Motorlux, auction previews, Porsche events, concours fields and dinners—I ran into people who contributed to The Enthusiast’s Guide to Collector Cars, are helping with The Enthusiast’s Guide to Porsche, or may contribute to a future book.
It was a chance to reconnect with old friends, finally meet people I’d only known through emails and phone calls, and discover some great new stories along the way.
The cars may provide the subject matter, but the people provide the stories.

|
There was also a special hometown victory at Pebble Beach. Congratulations to fellow Cincinnatian Harry Yeaggy, whose incredible Duesenberg SSJ won Best of Show!
Even better, a few episodes ago I picked Harry’s SSJ to win on The Collector Car Podcast. I’m not suggesting the Pebble Beach judges were listening…but I’m not ruling it out either:)

⌚ My Monterey Watch Meets Its Match
|
|
|
My Monterey watch this year was my, on loan, Breguet Marine 5517 in rose gold, and at Pebble Beach I found its perfect automotive match—a preservation Lancia Stratos…owned by previous podcast guest, David Eichenbaum.
Something about the Breguet’s distinctive design paired perfectly with the outrageous Stratos, right down to its iconic Campagnolo wheels. Of course, I had to get the picture.
Matching your watch to someone else’s Lancia Stratos? That might be peak Monterey.

📮 Come Along for the Ride — My Monterey Daily Diaries
|
|
|
This year I tried something different.
Instead of waiting until Monterey was over to tell the story, I created a daily video diary, documenting the people, cars, food, surprises, and occasional absurdity of Car Week as it happened.
Each day became its own adventure.

Monterey is often measured in auction totals, sale prices, horsepower and rarity.
But this year reminded me that the collector car world isn’t really about the cars. It’s about the people—and especially the next generation who will care for them.
Every kid who looks at an old car and asks, “What is that?” could be starting a lifelong passion. The cars have survived for decades.
Our job is to make sure the passion for them does, too.
